A friend of mine has been serving as a missionary to islands in the Caribbean for the past thirteen years.  She recently wrote about an opportunity that has opened up for her mission to take their work into the French-speaking islands of that part of the world, starting with Haiti.

As she faces this tremendous new challenge and opportunity, she writes the following:  “Every door has challenges and work written across it.  They seem to loom large for this opportunity: the needed finances, the translation of manuals, teaching six weeks through translators, and the building of a team of instructors and translators who can join us in Haiti.  Courage and wisdom are greatly needed, and we are completely trusting and depending on our great and mighty God, looking expectantly to what He is going to accomplish.”

I love that last line!  Think about it as it applies to your own life, or to personal or ministry challenges in front of you.  We need courage and wisdom for our circumstances.  But how often we fail to remember that our God is great and mighty!

Here are some Bible verses that comforted and encouraged me this morning.  I hope they will do the same for you as you consider your own need for courage and wisdom … and the great and mighty God we can trust and depend upon completely!

• The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.                Psalm 34:18
• Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all.             Psalm 34:19
• Does He not see all my ways, and number all my steps?                                                              Job 31:4
• For His eyes are upon the ways of a man, and He sees all his steps.                                          Job 34:21  (an answer to the question asked in 31:4)
• Surely God will not act wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice.                             Job 34:12   (God never does something that is wrong.)

As you can see, those last three verses are from the Book of Job which we’re studying at Wednesday night Home Group.  I hope you’ll join us tonight.  We’re going to take a look at Satan, one of the main characters at the beginning of Job’s story.  Who is he?  What are his origins?  What does he do?  What is his ultimate destiny?

Birthright Open House & Donor Appreciation – Friday, March 1, 6-8 pm, 231 N. Cedar, in Nevada.

Birthright would like to say “thank you” to all those who have supported their center over the years.  An open house from 6-8 pm on March 1 will be an opportunity to meet the board, the director, and other Birthright volunteers.  You’ll be able to tour the Birthright center and find out about all they do to support moms and babies in our area!

Personal

This is a busy week with show choir activities all week long, and our Nevada Show Choir Classic this Saturday all day at Nevada High School.  We’ll be hosting the largest show choir competition in the state of Missouri.  Nearly 40 schools will be represented, from as far away as Oklahoma and South Dakota.  It will be a long, long day and night!  We have three more Saturday show choir competitions this season – Nevada, Carthage, and Webb City – and have also been scheduled for a national competition in Branson on April 6.

I’m looking forward today to having lunch with my good friend Dale Losch who spoke at Crossroads last fall on the story of Jonah and God’s love for the people we sometimes think don’t deserve to be loved.

Evan and the Nevada team played basketball last night against Logan-Rogersville High School.  Evan’s Grandma Rea got to be there to watch the games, and the grandson of good friends of ours played for Logan-Rogersville.

Esther took her ACT last Saturday and has been nominated to attend Missouri Girls State this coming summer.

We’re getting serious about preparing for Andrew’s and Molly’s wedding this May in South Carolina with all the family there.

I have a picture I like of Diana receiving a singing Valentine six years ago on Valentine’s Day.  Memories of a special day when we were trying to push through difficult circumstances with the help of a great and mighty God.

I still marvel at the sudden passing of our friend Bob Scheibe less than a week ago.  Bob was enjoying visiting Crossroads Church on occasion.  You were a blessing to him, and I believe he was to all of us as well.  Let’s consider how we might bless all who come to visit or to stay at Crossroads Church!  One of the purposes of our being together – whether at worship, at home group, or at any time with each other – is mutual encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25).

I hope to see you tonight for Home Group, and on Sunday at the Y for worship!

He hurls down his hail like pebbles. Who can withstand his icy blast?   Psalm 147:17

By the breath of God the ice is formed and the watery expanses are frozen.    Job 37:10

I hope you’re faring well during these cold, icy days God has given us.  As I write this, the sunshine is reflecting off the ice on the trees, the yard, the power lines; yes, and even the trash cans!  Some of the ice is melting, too, and birds were singing again this morning.  Maybe the icy blast is over for this time, and spring is hopefully not far away.

Did you hear the story about the man who loved summer?  He waited and waited every year for nine months, waiting for summer to come.  Then when it got there, he remembered how much he hated it !  … because of the mosquitoes, the heat, and all the outdoor work he had to do !  We’re often like that, aren’t we … failing to recognize that each day and each season of life are from the Lord, and for Him!

I was reading this week in Exodus, at the point where the Israelites begin to journey out across the wilderness.  God gave them bread from heaven – manna – which doesn’t sound especially exciting, except that it was his daily, miraculous provision for their needs.  He tested them, really every day, to see if they were trusting him (and maybe also to examine their hearts for thankfulness?).

You’ve heard the story of Matthew Henry, minister and Bible commentator (1662-1714) who, when he was robbed, made a note of four things for which he was thankful:

• thankful that he had never before been robbed
• thankful that he was only robbed, and not killed
• thankful that, while he was robbed of all his money, it wasn’t much
• thankful that it was he who was robbed, and not he who robbed.

I hope you’re finding some bright, sunny thing for which to be thankful today!  Let’s be looking for them!  And, let’s be in prayer for several in our Crossroads family who have needs in their lives at this time:

• Jerry Reedy, Dave’s dad, recovering from pneumonia and a trip to the ER
• Judy Moore, also recovering from health challenges last week
• Julie Kemper, taking care of her extended family, and especially of her elderly aunt
• Marie Roberts, looking for work
• others caring for family members in difficult situations
• students working hard at their studies ; other adult children in transitional stages of life
• our elders meeting this Sunday after church
• Joe Chenoweth who will be meeting with the elders later this month to work on next-steps for “Walking the Walls.”

Thanks to everyone who is part of the Crossroads Family and who so graciously and faithfully pray and give and serve!

Worship, Youth Bible Study, this Sunday

I’m very excited about our worship service coming up this Sunday, from 1 Corinthians 12, on being “Church Glue.”  What is the glue that holds a church together and gives it a dynamic, impactful ministry?  I’m so excited about the message, I feel I could give it all away in this email!  I hope you’ll be at the Y on Sunday for wonderful worship and for food from God’s Word.  Thanks to those who set up, those who will serve in Children’s Church, and all those who tear down after worship!  Thanks to our greeters and musicians!  Thanks to Phill Edwards who prepares the bulletin and slides!  Hope to see all of you Sunday at 10:00!  Don’t forget Bible Study for all middle school and high school students at 9:00.

 

Next Wednesday, February 13, we’ll resume Home Group and Youth Group at the Rodriguez home, *contact us for more information*, 6:30-8:00 pm.  Again, we’ll have an exciting study for adults in the Book of Job.  Since Satan is one of the important characters at the beginning of that story, we’re going to take a look at who he is, where he’s from, and what he does.  As I was preparing yesterday, the study on Satan also took me down the road of “what are angels?”  Very exciting to study who these beings are, and that will also be part of our study together next Wednesday.  Hope to see you then!

Dear Crossroads Family,

I remember very well my family’s first night in Nevada.  It had been a long day of packing, cleaning, driving, and unpacking again, with much help along the way from our church families in both Hermann and Nevada.  The air-conditioner wasn’t working in our new house on Arch Street that night, and it was a hot July night.  In my room, there was a mattress with a sheet on the floor, and that was all I needed to collapse after an exhausting day.

In the middle of that night (sometime during the early hours of Thursday morning), despite the noise of fans blowing around me and above me, I was awakened by the tremendous noise of the trash truck passing through the neighborhood stopping every few feet to empty, with its mechanical arm, the trash bins along the side of the street.  It was a new sound to me – our home in Hermann had been in the country, and we drove our trash a half-mile or so to the dumpsters of the fishing “resort” across the road from our house.  The sudden, surprising sound of that truck passing through was an unforgettable noise that marked our arrival to a new home and a new stage in our lives.

Now you may have a hard time believing this, but I don’t think I have missed an early Thursday morning passing of the trash truck in the nearly four years since that first night in Nevada!  It’s normally around 3:30 a.m. – very noisy – but it’s my regular reminder that the Lord has faithfully brought me through another week. It’s a moment of time when I’m reminded again that God is faithful.  I often offer a prayer of thanks to God and then (sometimes) go back to sleep.

Last night at Home Group we read some in the story of Job.  Job lived through a long, hot, dark night of the soul, wondering if God took notice of him or his prayers.  Some of the themes of Job’s speeches are these:

• disappointment in his friends
• disillusionment with God’s ways
• despair of life (and desire for death)
• desire for vindication
• … but also declarations of God’s greatness.

Have you experienced any (or maybe all) of the feelings Job experienced?  At the end of Job’s story, God passed by in very noisy way and faithfully intervened in Job’s situation.  Job is led to say, “I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted” (Job 42:1).  Those are reassuring words for us!  God’s purposes for you and me – and for our world – will not be thwarted.  It’s great to know He has purposes, and it’s great to know He faithfully accomplishes what He purposes to do!  Looking back over the past four years, I can see that has been true for me.  I hope you’ll know it to be true for you too!

This Sunday

Worship at 10:00 at the Osage Prairie YMCA, 500 W. Highland Ave.  I look forward to seeing you there!  We will celebrate the Lord’s Supper (Communion) as part of our worship service.

Youth Bible Study on “Jesus Freaks” at 9:00 Sunday morning.  All Middle School & High School students are welcome for a good time of encouragement and spiritual growth!

Other Reminders

Several of our women will be part of the Women’s Retreat in Branson this weekend, along with women from The Springs Church in Springfield.  The theme is “Be Loved,” from 1 John 3:1.  Let’s pray for God to bless this gathering of women with joy and love and renewal.

Men, we had a good time this past Monday night in study and fellowship!  Let’s plan to meet again on Monday, February 18, 6:30 pm, at Precision Coffee for our next get-together.  All men welcome!

How Important is a Sunday Worship Service to You?

I came across the following in an old book a friend gave me called Halley’s Bible Handbook.  I think it was originally written in 1927, nearly 100 years ago!

Here’s what Halley said about Sunday worship:

“Nothing ever happens in any community as important to the life of the community as the regular Sunday worship services.  Every community ought to love its churches and, at this appointed time, turn out, en masse, to honor HIM in whose name the church exists.”

Isn’t that a wonderful, bold statement?  Here’s what he said about teaching young people (Sunday School) :  “The Sunday School is by far the most valuable branch of Church work.  It is a fearful mistake for the church to neglect the children of its community.  What a glorious thing it is to be a good Sunday School teacher, and help shepherd the children!”  Thanks to those who teach children and youth at Crossroads!  We could use one or two more volunteer teachers or helpers who would like to be with the littlest kids at Crossroads one Sunday per month during the sermon time.

I hope you’re growing in your conviction that the coming together of the church family to worship the Lord on a regular basis is a much-needed part of each of our lives.  I enjoy our Sunday mornings at Crossroads, and I think you do too.  I’m always blessed when I meet there with the Lord and with you!  I hope to see you this Sunday for good worship, fellowship, encouragement, and teaching.

A concluding remark by Henry Halley (the caps are his!)  :  “A regularly good Sunday morning church service is unquestionably THE VERY GREATEST BLESSING A COMMUNITY CAN HAVE.  It is not possible to exaggerate its importance.”

Hello, Crossroads Family!

God has been so good to us as a church at the start of this new year.  I want to share below some highlights from last Sunday’s meetings.  I hope they will encourage you, whether you were in attendance or unable to be there.

I read a phrase in 2 Corinthians 11:3 this past week that stuck with me.  In his concern for the spiritual well-being of the Corinthian Christians, Paul speaks of “the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.”  I like that phrase.  I hope you’ll read it again to yourself.  I feel that, in many ways, that’s what we’re striving for at Crossroads – a simple and pure devotion to Christ.  Thanks for being willing for that to be a reality in your own life and in the lives of others around you!

Highlights from last Sunday:

At our congregational business meeting, Dave Reedy was re-elected to the Elder Board for a term of three years.  Thanks to our Nominating Committee, and to everyone who participated in that decision, … and to Dave for his willingness to serve.

Judi Edwards presented a 2019 budget for the church which was approved by those present, and which included some new ministry line-items.  It’s great to see our vision for ministry increasing as communicated through the budget.  It was great to see a small financial commitment in this year’s budget toward the developing Young Life ministry in Nevada.  I’m so grateful that Crossroads has had a role in launching such a wonderful ministry.

We can thank the Lord that together our giving has been gradually increasing over the past several months.  We will all need to grow in that area – and pray for God’s provision – in order to meet the budget in 2019.  Thank you, Judi, and thank you, elders, for putting together a good budget for us at this point in our growth.  Thank you, too, to the congregation for the gift of a raise in my salary.  I appreciate very much your kindness and affirmation of my work among you.

Our larger congregational meeting was followed up by meetings of our two new “Walk the Walls” ministry teams — the Sunday Morning Team, and the Follow-Up Team.  Also, a growing Worship Team met together and did some planning.  Let’s pray for these teams as they serve us!

Sunday Morning Team:  Cris & Forrest; Richard & Marie ; Evan ; Dave, Shane, & Phill (greeters).  (I apologize if I forgot someone on that team!)  They are doing a great job envisioning how to make Sunday morning at Crossroads a great experience for everyone who attends!

Follow-Up Team:  Judi, Stacey, and Liz currently make up this team.  They are working on updating our visitors card, keeping better track of following up newcomers to Crossroads, and helping us do a better job of reaching out to those who visit on Sundays.  There is room for others on the Follow-Up Team if you’re interested!

Worship Team:  Erlinda, Erin, and Hannah met Sunday to develop a schedule for planning and leading worship during the next quarter.  I’m so glad for these ones and others (like Esther, Evan, Ebony, Chosen, and Natalie) who are exercising worship and creativity gifts to help us grow in our worship!  Please pray for them!  It’s not easy to plan a morning worship service!  And it’s not easy to step out and be part of leading one!

“Let us arise and build,” is what the Israelites said to Nehemiah when he urged them to strengthen the walls surrounding Jerusalem!  Building is exciting work, and Sunday’s meetings were a positive part of strengthening the walls and gates at Crossroads.

In addition, we set dates for the winter start-up of…

… Home Group:  We’ll meet January 30th, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m., at the home of Cris and Donna, **contact us for more details**.  We will not meet Wednesday, February 6, but we will start back up after that regularly on Wednesday nights beginning February 13.  We are looking for some ideas for study / discussion for the adult group.  If you have some ideas to give as input, please let me know!

… Youth Group:  Our Middle School & High School group will also meet at the Rods on Wednesday evenings starting January 30 (no meeting on February 6).

… Youth Bible Study:  All Middle Schoolers & High Schoolers are invited to the Sunday morning Bible Study group starting Sunday, January 27, 9:00 – 9:45.  (I will not be leading an adult study during the show choir competition season – January thru mid-March – but if someone else would like to lead an adult study, let me know!)

We scheduled our next congregational meeting for Sunday, March 24, immediately following the morning worship service.  We hope at that time to organize for Easter (April 21st this year).

A Few Other Notes

Next Men’s Discipleship & Fellowship Evening:  Monday, January 28, 6:30 pm.  We’ll meet at Precision Coffee, and we’ll start a brand new study book in our series.  All men are welcome!

Women’s Retreat:  I’m excited that we have such a good group of women planning to join ladies from The Springs Church (our sister E-Free Church in Springfield) February 1-3 in Branson for a special time of retreat and refreshment!  Let’s be in prayer for the many things God would like to do that weekend!

An Offer

Al Frank, our E-Free Central District Associate Superintendent, has informed me that there is a church in the St Louis area inquiring about places where they might be able to send a missions team this summer.  He’s wondering if Crossroads might like some help in some special ministry outreach this summer … a Vacation Bible School?  door-to-door outreach in Nevada?  some other special outreach event?  What a great opportunity – some free help and encouragement in reaching out!  Do you have some thoughts or ideas about whether we could involve some outside help in a special ministry thrust this summer?  Let me know if you do!  Thank you!

Hello and Happy New Year!

My friend Dale Losch reminded me this week how important it was in France to give a wish for a “Happy New Year” to every person you knew the first time that you saw them in January — a wish for a happy new year, and a wish for good health in the coming year.  Sometimes you lost track of who you had wished “Happy New Year” to and who you hadn’t … and it was kind of inappropriate to do it twice!

So here’s a wish to you for a happy new year and for good spiritual and physical health in the coming year!  The Apostle John wrote in the little letter of 3 John, “Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.”

In this edition of TMG, I’d like to share some personal thoughts for the new year, but first here’s the schedule for this Sunday morning at Crossroads, January 13, at the Osage Prairie YMCA.

• A short “family” meeting to elect a new elder, and to approve a budget for 2019.
• Meetings of the two “Walk the Walls” teams – the Sunday Morning Team, and the Follow-Up Team.

I hope you’ll join us for as much as you’re able!  Good refreshment for the soul, and some good planning to take place during our meetings.  Dave Reedy has been nominated by our Nominating Committee to be re-elected to the Elder Board.  Our by-laws state that Dave must receive 75% approval of the voting membership at Sunday’s meeting.

A Few Personal Thoughts

God did so many things for my family and me over the Christmas Break.  Thank you for allowing me to have some much-needed personal time away from ministry.  I want to share a few things we did, and a few things I took away from the break.

Highlights included:

• Before the start of the break, I was able to speak to the French classes at Nevada High School about what Christmas was like in France.  Our discussion went everywhere from the history of religion in France to what Christmas trees were like in Brussels, Belgium.  I’m thankful for these students at NHS.  Each one wrote an essay about my talk; I have the essays and will treasure the thoughts and comments found in them.
• Our Christmas Eve service at Crossroads (the first-ever since I’ve been here) was meaningful and well attended.  I really enjoyed it, and a big thankyou to everyone who helped prepare and lead that special time of fellowship and worship.
• I was able to see all of my Missouri children at some point during the break; also time with my mother-in-law, Diana’s sister and family, and my mom.  Evan, Sam, and I even got some tennis in on a couple of warm days.  Esther and Evan spent New Years at my mom’s; they had an “Outer Space” theme for their party this year!  I learned that I’m expecting my fifth grandchild this coming summer (Jason and Emma).  This one will join their three boys, plus Fiona out in South Carolina.
• I had some good time alone; good reading time; good times of talking to God; and also a hike through Harry S. Truman State Park on a day when it was closed to cars and empty of people – just me, the trees, and what appeared to be a couple of eagles flying about.

I jotted down what were for me the major personal events of 2018:

• Three big, busy events last spring:  Billy’s graduation from the College of the Ozarks; Sam’s graduation from high school; Billy’s and Hannah’s wedding last June.  All the family together.
• A fun little Spring Break trip that Evan, Samuel, and I took down to Bentonville, Ark.
• Playing tennis again on a regular basis, and watching Samuel play for Nevada High School last spring.
• A very, very busy fall season.
• Ongoing iron infusions and the discovery that at the root of my iron-deficiency is a problem known as “Watermelon Stomach” (also known as Gastric Antral Vascular Ectasia, or GAVE).

Some hopes for 2019:

• A less crowded schedule, and more intentional times of “Sabbath.”  “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it,” God once said to the Israelites (Isaiah 30:15).
• Planning the trip out East in May for Andrew’s and Molly’s wedding.
• Healing for my stomach.
• Plans for Esther and Evan for the summer.
• Trusting God; waiting on Him, rather than relying so much on my own “common sense” or feelings.

A helpful quote is one from Oswald Chambers who said, “Trust God and do the next thing.  What duty lies at hand?  Do that thing.”

I also jotted down these responsibilities of a pastor that I had read many years ago in a good book called On Being a Pastor, by Derek Prime and Alistair Begg.  Here are what these two men considered to be the goals and priorities of a pastor:

1. Feed the flock.                                                                                            John 21:15-17
2. Proclaim the whole will of God.                                                              Acts 20:27
3. Present God’s people complete (perfect, mature) in Christ.             Colossians 1:28-29
4. Prepare God’s people for service.                                                          Ephesians 4:12
5. Equip God’s people to be fishers of men.                                              John 10:16
6. Keep watch over yourself.                                                                        Acts 20:28

Did you know these are the things that are on my heart to do as your pastor?  I appreciate your help keeping me focused on those few things.  (Many pastors, including myself, try to do much more than what God has given them to do.)  Probably the hardest thing on that list for me is #6.  I struggle every week with great feelings of inadequacy – especially without my ministry partner of 28 years.

I’m so thankful for the good things happening at Crossroads Church:

• So thankful for our time of “walking the walls” which will continue on into 2019.  “Let us arise and build,” is our calling this year (from Nehemiah2:18).
• So thankful for the involvement of many people in new ways, and I look forward to that continuing to be the case in the new year.
• So thankful for ongoing ministry to young people, both in high school and college.  (Plan is to start up Sunday youth studies again on January 27, and Wednesday youth group on January 30.)
• So thankful for those who are praying for, organizing, and getting involved in plans for Young Life in Nevada.  Let’s continue to pray for this movement, and for those from Crossroads who are involved.
• So thankful for the support of those in our Evangelical Free Church Central District, and for new friendship with Joe Chenoweth and leaders at Cornerstone Community (E-Free) Church in Harrisonville.

Some things I wonder about:

• As the church grows in number, how do we provide care and continue to build strong relationships?
• How do we make Crossroads more visible in the community?
