Hello everyone!

I’m really looking forward to getting Home Group started up next Wednesday for four weeks during June. I hope you’ll join us at the Rodriguez’s home (contact us for directions).

During June, instead of doing sermon discussion questions, we’re going to do a short study in New Testament book of Philippians. Philippians is a book about joy!
• “The important thing is that in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice. Yes, and I will continue to rejoice.” Philippians 1:18
• “I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith.” Philippians 1:25
• “Make my joy complete.” Philippians 2:2
• “Even if I am being poured out like a drink offering,… I am glad and rejoice with all of you.” Philippians 2:17
• “Whatever happens, my dear brothers and sisters, rejoice in the Lord.” Philippians 3:1
• “Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” Philippians 4:4
Yet, in the middle of this letter on joy, we also find Paul weeping (Philippians 3:18)! A real letter with real emotion … and a help for our real lives! Are you in need of finding the Lord’s joy again?

Home group is a great time for refreshment and connection. Part of the growth and healthy future of a church is found in the connections its people make during the week. Hope you’ll come receive from others, and be a blessing to others!

This Sunday starting at 10:00 at the Y. We’ll be back in the book of Acts, looking at a difficult decision Paul made to return to Jerusalem, despite the counsel of friends not to go ! How does God lead us through difficult decisions? Acts 21. There will be Children’s Church for the kids during the sermon time. Thanks to those who are serving kids! Next Sunday, June 10
Two changes for next Sunday, the 10th: First, there will be a pickleball tournament going on in the gym at the Y, so we will meet in the lobby. Second, I will be gone for my son Billy’s wedding, so Dave Wood will bring the morning message. Dave is a faithful servant of the Lord, and you’ll enjoy his teaching from God’s Word. I know he is looking forward to being with us again.

We’re planning to have a membership class for anyone interested in learning more about Crossroads Church on June 24th, at 6 pm, at my house. Please let me know if you’re interested. It will be an informal, discussion-oriented time together. Thank you!

Happy Friday!

Someone shared this Bible verse with me recently, and I pass it along to you: “It is right that I should feel as I do about all of you, for you have a very special place in my heart. We have shared together the blessings of God.” (Philippians 1:7-9, NLT).

It’s great to be part of a church where we have strong feelings for each other,…and where we’re sharing together the blessings of God!

I hope to see you this Sunday at 10:00 at the Y for some good worship and fellowship!

Thoughts on my mind…

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Show ‘n’ Shine barbecue last Saturday. Although we didn’t win first prize, our barbecue was nevertheless the best! Thanks to Richard Roberts for preparing it! Mostly we had a good time of fellowship; we helped a good cause (Habitat for Humanity); and we were able to interact with people from our community. Thanks again for a good time!

Thanks to two extra people who have volunteered to help with Children’s Church during the month of June! Such an answer to prayer! We could still use one or two more for the summer months, so as to lighten the load on those serving. It doesn’t have to be a “forever” commitment – would you just commit to taking a Sunday? This is truly an important part of growing a healthy church, and it’s a needed ministry to the children who are part of Crossroads.

This Sunday’s sermon will be “Lessons from Jonah.” Jonah happens to be the Bible story the kids studied last week in Children’s Church. This Sunday we’re all going to take a look at it together – kids and adults – and have some fun doing it! Who is the book of Jonah really about – Jonah? the fish ? Nineveh? God? You and me?

Don’t forget we’re going to the ball game on Sunday night, June 3, as the Nevada Griffons host St. Joe. It’s Church Night – admission is free, and if you bring your bulletin from that morning we’ll be entered in a drawing for a $75 contribution to our youth ministry. Mark your calendar if you haven’t already!

Home Group starts up Wednesday, June 6, at 6:30 pm at Cris and Donna’s house. We’ll meet four weeks before taking a summer break. If you haven’t been to Home Group lately, you’re missing the heartbeat of Crossroads Church. I encourage you to come. You’ll be encouraged, and you’ll share with others in the church the blessings of God.

Phill and Judi Edwards invite us all to their home after worship on Sunday, June 24, for a carry-in meal. If you don’t have plans that Sunday, let’s prolong our fellowship around an informal meal at Phill and Judi’s house for anyone who would like to come. We’ll keep it very simple – just plan to bring some food you can share with the group!

I enjoyed the lesson in one of our small discipleship groups this past week on “Obedience.” The lesson took us to the conversion of Saul of Tarsus in Acts chapter 9, and focused specifically on: 1) Saul’s obedience when the Lord instructed him to “go into the city (Damascus)”; and 2) the obedience of Ananias who was told to go visit this persecutor of Christians in the home where he was staying. These two small steps of obedience had long-lasting rippling effects, serving to launch the ministry of Saul/Paul which indirectly has reached you and me. The point of the lesson is that if we are seeking God’s will for our lives, it’s usually found by taking that next small step of obedience. If we will do that “next thing” that we know we’re supposed to do as followers of Christ, God will lead us along the way, and our obedience will have long-lasting effects that we probably never anticipated.

A New Start. The past three years at Crossroads have really been a work of God in giving our church a new start. It has been exciting to see Him do it! There are so many good things going on, and so many awesome people – all of you! What is particularly heartening to me are…

… a good spirit. It’s a spirit of people sincerely seeking God. It’s a spirit that causes you to show up on Sunday mornings with smiles on your faces. I enjoy that very much! Sunday is a highlight for me – I need the worship and interaction as much as you do!
… hard workers. I see this at events like Show ‘n’ Shine, or at our Thanksgiving dinner, or in your willingness to reach out to students from Cottey College.
… your willingness to grow as students of the Word, as disciples of the Lord Jesus, and as makers of disciples. That’s what the Lord has called us to do – make disciples.

What’s next for Crossroads? How do we solidify the ministry God has given us so that it has a long-lasting impact, beyond just what we enjoy today? We’re a little like the Jews in the book of Nehemiah, some of whom had returned to Jerusalem, but they were still vulnerable because the walls of the city were in disrepair. God sent Nehemiah to repair the walls so the city could be secure.

Joe Chenoweth is one of the men who have been helping us get the Young Life ministry started in Nevada. Joe is from Harrisonville, Missouri, and is an elder at one of the two Evangelical Free churches in Harrisonville, Cornerstone Community Church (https://www.3chv.org/). Joe has a plan he uses to help some Young Life groups in the KC metro area get a new start. He calls it “Bumpstart.” Recently, I had a chance to visit with Joe about his Bumpstart ideas. Joe feels the principles he uses in Bumpstart could also easily apply to a church such as ours. Joe is willing to come down sometime this summer to meet with our leadership and talk through some practical steps we could take to help Crossroads grow to the next level of its ministry. Would you pray with me about that potential meeting between Joe and us? I’m really grateful for his heart for Nevada and for Crossroads.

Hello, Crossroads Family & Friends!

Looking forward to a great weekend together, both at the Showe ‘n’ Shine barbecue and car show, and also Sunday morning for worship at the Y. I hope you’ll make plans to join the “family.”

If you can still lend a hand at Showe ‘n’ Shine on Saturday, please let me know. Set-up begins at 8:30, and if you can help serve at the Crossroads stand, we could use your help any time between 10:00 and 2:00. The main thing will be to enjoy some fellowship and to interact with people from our community. Thanks to Richard Roberts who is preparing the barbecue for Crossroads. Stop by if you can; as you know, the proceeds from the day benefit Habitat for Humanity.

On Sunday we’ll continue a short look at some of the end-time events spoken of in the Bible. If you missed last week’s sermon from Ezekiel 38-39 on “Harry Truman, Israel, and the End of the World,” you can listen to it on the church website,www.nevadacrossroadschurch.org. You can also find my sermon notes under the “Ministries” tab. Thanks to Heather and Michelle for all the help on the church website.

This Sunday we’ll consider the subject of the Rapture, as written of by Paul in 1 Thessalonians 4. The word “rapture” means to be “caught up” in the clouds to be with the Lord. Take a look at that section of Scripture, if you have a chance, before Sunday. (In fact, an even better exercise would be to read the entire first letter to the Thessalonians. It’s a short letter!) What is the Rapture? When will it happen? What difference does it make? Are we nearing the culmination of God’s plan for the world, and the coming reign of Jesus Christ on the earth? C.S. Lewis once said, “If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were precisely those who thought the most of the next.” Interesting thought. We should keep our eyes on what lies ahead; it will make a difference in us and in our world today.

Help Needed
We have a wonderful ministry to children on Sunday mornings during the sermon time. Thanks to those who are currently helping! Ministry to children is an essential part of a local church, and a response to the Lord’s command who said, “Let the children come to me.” In my opinion, the growth of a local church depends on its willingness and ability to reach out to young people and to families. We’re still in need of some helpers and teachers for Children’s Church to relieve those currently carrying the load. Would you be willing to sign up for one or more Sundays this summer? If you are a helper, the job is easy: show up and love children! If you’re interested in teaching, Judi Edwards is doing a great job of preparing the lesson plans in a way that makes it easy for you to teach. Please let me or Judi know if you can help. A person’s “belonging” in a church is really solidified through serving in some way. We could use your help! Thank you!

Finishing Well
I’ve been reading through the book of Exodus this spring and finished it this week. At the end of those powerful stories of Moses and the Israelites comes this phrase: “Moses finished the work” (Exodus 40:33).

Poor Moses! What a challenge he had in leading the people out of slavery toward the Promised Land. He faced so much misunderstanding and opposition during that first year when the people should have been the happiest!

At the end of the book, however, is … amazingly … worship! Several chapters at the end of the book detail the building of the Tabernacle (the place where the nation would worship), and the people’s willingness to give materially toward the construction of that Tabernacle. God gave instructions to Moses on how this worship center was to be built, and “Moses finished the work.”

What a relief it is to finish a work! Graduates know all about that. Teachers do too. People who follow the Lord Jesus know what that’s like, too, because spiritual growth is a process; there are steps along the way where we realize, “I’ve grown! I’ve understood something! I’m a changed person! God has finished a work he was doing in my life! Now, on to the next step!”

Life – and ministry – is a process. We have to press on, through the good and the difficult, until we reach the point Moses did where we enjoy the satisfaction of finishing some work! We look back and say that it was worth the effort.

At Crossroads, we’re in the middle (probably, more realistically, at the beginning) of our work together. There’s joy, too, in starting something … with a vision of that day when the work will be firmly established and will have an ongoing impact in the world. Let’s be like Moses, take courage, and press on toward the finish line. Time, planning, organization, unity, patience, and obedience to the Lord will be required of us. It will be a work of God in our hearts and in our community. The result will be lives (our own and others’) impacted for eternity – a spiritual legacy for the Lord. In fact, it’s already happening, so let us, like Moses, … “finish the work.”

Following that phrase in Exodus of “finishing the work” comes a final statement that a cloud of God’s glory rose up and set out before the Israelites each time God wanted them to move forward. God led this group of imperfect people. He will lead us too. Where do you see him presently moving forward? Where are you and I to follow him?

Personal
• The school year is winding down, and I’m grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to serve at Nevada High School as accompanist to the show choirs there. It was one of the most successful years ever for the choirs. I enjoy that daily interaction with the students, faculty, and staff at Nevada High School, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to enjoy and play music! I’m planning to take on two or three piano students this summer. Let me know if you’re interested.
• I have an opportunity this Friday evening to accompany a soloist and a choir who will be singing as part of an informal spring concert at Cottey College. I’m looking forward to that and am grateful for some new connections there.
• We enjoyed being at my son Billy’s graduation this past Sunday from the College of the Ozarks near Branson. Billy is now studying for his medical school entrance exam … and getting ready for his marriage to Hannah Thieme June 10. I’ll be conducting the wedding ceremony which will take place in Ash Grove, Missouri.
• We are looking forward to Sam’s graduation from NHS this Sunday, and also that of Trent Ellis and others at NHS. Congratulations on a lot of hard work!
• My health seems fine. I will see the hematologist and gastroenterologist (Drs. Hawamdeh and Wu) again this summer to see how my iron levels are looking.

We’re very quickly winding down to the end of another school year. It’s hard to believe that my family and I have been in Nevada for nearly three years. (It will be exactly three years on July 1.) The time has flown by; it seems like only yesterday that we were moving into our pink (now green) house on Arch Street.

I was thinking about what has happened at Crossroads Church in three years: What have we done? What has God done in our midst? Here are some things that came to my mind (in no particular order of importance,… and I’m sure I’m forgetting something!) :

• Grown numerically. I count 36 people (including children) who are new to our church in the past three years. Several of these have gone through the membership course and are now members of the church. (We are sorry that Jami and Tori Schultz had to move away this semester, but we wish them well and hope to stay in touch!)
• Several people (I count six) have given testimony of their faith in Christ through water baptism.
• We completed two years of a Men’s Fraternity group in which many men in our church and beyond were blessed.
• We’ve had two successful women’s Bible study groups.
• We’ve started a small but dynamic Middle School / High School youth group.
• We’ve started a weekly Children’s Church program for the younger kids attending Crossroads.
• We’ve begun a weekly home group for strengthening bonds between us. (Home group will meet during June starting Wednesday, June 6, 6:30-8:30 pm, at the Rodriguez home.)
• A weekly prayer meeting takes place also, many times just prior to home group. (Prayer group on Wednesdays in May and June at 5:45 pm at Judi and Phill Edwards’ home.)
• We have at least ten people involved in a one-on-one discipleship program, “Ten Steps Toward Christian Maturity.” Many at Crossroads are growing spiritually in new and exciting ways.
• We’ve supported three short-term missions trips involving young people from Crossroads.
• We’ve been able to provide financial support to our local Birthright chapter, and also to many individuals and families through our Blessings Fund.
• We’ve moved many women and families out of the Moss House into their new homes!
• We’ve made connections with the Evangelical Free Church Central District through Al Frank, our Associate Superintendent; and we’ve made connections with, and have received support from, The Springs E-Free Church in Springfield.
• We’ve elected a new Elder Board.
• We have a new Church Financial Manager who is doing a great job with our finances.
• We’ve reached out at the Show ‘n’ Shine Barbecue, through a pool party, and by serving at the Pop Shop during the Vernon County Youth Fair.
• Several from Crossroads are getting in on the ground floor of a new Young Life ministry in Nevada, both at Cottey College and for Nevada high school students.
• We’ve developed a new website and have a church member operating it for us.
All this with a pastor who has been battling with anemia! Imagine what you could have done with a healthy (and normal) pastor!

I was quite amazed and grateful last Sunday morning as we said good-bye to seven wonderful Cottey College students who have brought a lot of life and joy into our church family. Congratulations to Rachel and to Hannah, both of whom are receiving degrees this coming Sunday. Congratulations to our two Nevada High School grads, Trent and Sam. Congrats also to four others of our Crossroads family receiving college degrees this month: Elena, Lindsey, Grace, and Billy.

God has been good to us, and faithful to care and grow the seed he has planted in our hearts.

Are we faithful to him? I enjoyed the following definition I read recently of “faithfulness.” “Faithfulness is the willingness to fulfill a responsibility day after day, year after year, without needing to be asked, without demanding praise or thanks, but simply showing up again and again to do God’s work until the work is done.”

I think God loves and rewards faithfulness. To be faithful is to be like him.

Looking ahead, what are some needs we have at Crossroads? Several important ones come to mind:
• We will need several people to help out at the Show ‘n’ Shine barbecue Saturday, May 19th, at Dr. Schowengerdt’s. We’ll have a stand there from around 8:00 a.m. until around 2:00 p.m. If you indicated you would be available to help, we will be getting organized this coming Sunday.
• We need additional helpers for Children’s Church & nursery. What an important discipleship ministry is a church’s ministry to children. And, if we desire our church to grow, it’s important that families coming to Crossroads know there is a place for their children. Currently, we have three CC teachers, but the Rea kids are serving every week as helpers. Could you volunteer to help, even just one Sunday per month? The schedule can be flexible, but we need two people each Sunday (a teacher who is over 18 years old, and a helper who is at least 14 years old). You’ll be glad you did!
• A vision for women’s ministry would be an awesome addition to Crossroads. My experience in church ministry is that a group of woman growing spiritually is usually the dynamo of a vibrant church. How would the Lord make that to happen? Starting small is often the way to go … then watching God grow it.
• Vision for outreach, and a commitment to being the Lord’s light and love in the community. Who has that on their heart and will put action to it ?
• I am looking for help with worship. Leading music every Sunday, and preaching every Sunday (and possibly teaching a class too) is likely a path to burnout for me. Would love some people who would like to do the following : a) help plan worship (pick songs, organize the service) ; b) help lead music ; c) use creative ideas for our space in the gym which needs refreshing from time to time.
• We need to become strong in our giving, understanding that our giving is a reflection of our love for God, and that the first step in planting a long-lasting church is to be financially self-sufficient (i.e., meeting our expenses ; not drawing on reserves, but saving those reserves for a permanent “home” for Crossroads.)
• We need people to be faithful to pray regularly … for ministry, for pure hearts, for unity, for our Elder Board, for the pastor. Thank you!
I’m thinking back to last Sunday where we read the statement of the Lord Jesus that it’s more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). There are many statements of blessing in the Beatitudes in the Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount; here’s a statement by him of something that is more blessed.

By the way, thanks to those who gave generously last Sunday to the Blessings Fund to help Jon and Renee meet a few immediate needs following their house fire.

And congratulations to Adam and MacKenzie who became husband and wife last Friday afternoon!

I look forward to seeing everyone this Sunday morning. We’ll take a little break from Acts and instead look at a passage in the book of Ezekiel. The sermon will be on “Harry S. Truman, Israel, and the End of the World.” Hope you can be there at 10:00! No Adult Bible Study. No Youth Group Sunday night.

Dear Crossroads Family:

It’s great to be finishing up the school year and starting our spring/summer season on so many high notes. Last Sunday was another one, as we were challenged by a missions presentation from Elena Rodriguez concerning her summer trip to Costa Rica, and we enjoyed good interaction as a “family” at our congregational meeting after the worship service.

There seemed to be two major lines of discussion at our meeting: 1) thankfulness for God’s blessings on Crossroads since we last met; 2) how to continue to stay connected and experience good relationship-building during the summer months.

1. We are thankful for God’s provision of a new Elder Board which has begun meeting regularly, and also for a new Church Financial Manager, Judi Edwards. Judi shared a brief financial report at the meeting. We can be grateful that giving is up just slightly over last year, and expenses are down just slightly compared to last year. So we are seeing God’s faithful provision.

2. There was good discussion about how we can stay connected during the summer season. I’m grateful that one of the hallmarks developing at Crossroads is a desire to have strong, healthy relationships. Here are some thoughts that came out of that discussion:

— Ways to have fellowship while working together this summer:
• Show ‘n’ Shine barbecue, May 19. Several volunteered to help, and we will need help from around 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This is a good opportunity to have some visibility in our community and to benefit a good cause, Habitat for Humanity.
• Bushwhacker Days Gospel Night. Julie is needing volunteers to help in the hamburger tent on Thursday evening, June 7. Our church has regularly contributed financially to support this evening of gospel music; to serve those attending, as some of you volunteered to do, would be an extra special gift … as well as good fellowship.
• Pop Shop at the Vernon County Youth Fair in July. Those who served in the Pop Shop last year had a great time. Lots of smiles and laughter, and interaction with our community.

— Ways to have fun this summer. Some suggestions included…
• Let’s all go together to Church Night at the Nevada Griffons game! Church Night is Sunday, June 3rd, at 7:00 pm. Admission is free. If you bring your bulletin from church that morning, the church with the greatest number of bulletins will win a $75 donation to their youth ministry.
• Let’s have some fun going to watch the Cardinals play the Royals in Kansas City in August. We do have a church that loves baseball … and, once upon a time was pretty good at softball(!).
• Let’s plan some dates for a picnic, volleyball, softball, etc.

— Ways to develop spiritual ties this summer:
• Judi Edwards will host a time of prayer on Wednesday evenings on her back porch for all interested in praying for local, national, and worldwide needs. This has been a profitable time of prayer over the past year or more. God is using and blessing our commitment to prayer.
• Home Group will meet on Wednesday evenings during the month of June. I look forward to seeing you for good fellowship and encouragement.
• Continued involvement by those interested in the Young Life ministry development. Next meeting is scheduled for May 8 at 6 pm in the basement of the Cottey College chapel. Anyone is welcome to attend this organizing meeting.
• Ten Steps Toward Christian Maturity discipleship course. We currently have ten people from our church going through this course, and two from outside our church are getting started. Very exciting, and there is room for you to get started this summer. Let me know – I would love to help you get plugged in!

Don’t forget that this Sunday, April 29, we will celebrate Trent Ellis’s baptism at the conclusion of our worship service. (It is also Trent’s birthday!) I hope you can be there. Worship at 10:00 at the Y. There will be no Adult Bible Study at 9:00.

On Sunday, May 6, we will have a short reception following the worship service to honor our two high school graduates and three college graduates.

Let’s continue to put into action our hopes, wishes, and prayers for Crossroads, for our families, and for our individual lives. I was reading through 1 Thessalonians this morning and was reminded of the great long list of practical exhortations Paul gives at the end of that letter
(1 Thessalonians 5:12-11):
• Show appreciation to those who labor among you. Esteem them highly in love.
• Live in peace with each other.
• Admonish the unruly.
• Encourage the fainthearted.
• Help the weak.
• Be patient with everyone.
• Don’t repay evil for evil.
• Always seek after that which is good for everyone.
• Rejoice always.
• Pray at all times.
• Give thanks in everything.
• Don’t quench the Holy Spirit.
• Don’t scoff at prophecies.
• Examine everything carefully.
• Hold fast to what is good.
• Abstain from every form of evil.
The Christian life is an abundant life. God has shown us the roadmap, and he gives us the resources for it, if we will allow him to live out his life through us.
