Thanks for your willingness last Sunday to take a little detour – in light of the tragic events in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio – and to consider that some of the signs of the end times (which include an increase in violence) may be revealing themselves now. The period of God’s direct intervention in the affairs of men (referred to in the Bible as “the Day of the Lord,” or the “Tribulation,” or, “the time of Jacob’s distress”) may be near, casting its shadow ahead of it. We haven’t yet got the sermon audio up on the church website but hope to before the end of the week. I hope if you missed last Sunday’s service that you’ll take a listen!
This Sunday:
We’ll worship at 10:00 at the Y! Come early and enjoy the fellowship! Thanks to everyone who pitches in to set up, greet, and tear down after the service. Thanks to those who provide refreshments so regularly! We always have a good time on Sunday mornings, and I hope you’ll be with us this Sunday!
Our sermon will continue in the “Scrappy Church” series, this time from John 4 as we consider how Jesus reached out to someone who wasn’t a part of his regular circle of friends, and shared the Good News with her. One of the characteristics of a Scrappy Church is that it works hard to have an outward focus! People around us need the good news and hope we can give them. What can help us take the steps to reach out to them?
Here is a reminder of those attitude transitions that are part of a Scrappy Church – the small church that thrives in a culture of mega-churches:
- a transition from excuses to ownership
taking ownership of the church as it is, rather than making excuses for what it’s not
- a transition from obstacles to allies
unconditional love for everyone in the church, instead of viewing some people as obstacles
- a transition from limitations to abundance
understanding that our church has everything it needs to do what God wants it to do right now
- a transition from discouragement to joy
focusing on the positives rather than the negatives
- a transition from fear to courage
willing to cast vision and take positive steps toward the future
- a transition from an inward focus to an outward focus
experiencing the joy of reaching out to people outside our current group
I love this list! I use it during the week to check my own attitude and bring it to a place where, hopefully, God is better able to use me to make Crossroads a Scrappy Church!
I hope to see you Sunday!
Our upcoming sermons will be along these lines:
August 11
Scrappy Church: From Inward Focus to Outward Focus
How the Lord Jesus teaches us about reaching out to others — John 4.
August 18
Scrappy Church: From Inward Focus to Outward Focus
Some misconceptions we have about personal evangelism and the Gospel. We’ll take a look at several beliefs we hold about evangelism and salvation that God actually never expresses in the Bible!
August 25
Scrappy Church: From Limitations to Abundance
Some principles on generosity, giving, and ownership that cause scrappy churches and scrappy Christians to be vital and healthy.
Barbecue at the Y following the worship service! Plan to bring a side dish and/or dessert!
Beginning in September we’ll start working our way through the Book of Esther.
Did you know that the name of God never appears on the pages of this book?
Many times it’s hard for us to see God working in our lives. Yet, Queen Esther’s story shows that He does work, carefully and perfectly, to accomplish His good plans!
A reminder: No Thursday prayer today! Thanks to everyone who prayed on Thursdays this summer!
See you this Sunday!
