Hello, Crossroads family !
Thanks for being a serving church ! It’s awesome to watch you serve in so many ways, and to see people step in to take on new roles or to fill in when someone is missing !
- “Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise them accordingly …” (Romans 13:6).
- “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love ; give preference to one another in honor, not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord, rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality” (Romans 13:9-11).
Those are good reminders from Romans 13 about our privilege of serving each other. I also stumbled across this verse today while reading in the book of Jeremiah :
- “Cursed be the one who does the Lord’s work negligently” (Jeremiah 48:10).
Wow, that seems strongly worded, doesn’t it ! It’s in the context of a prophecy against the nation of Moab — a war-time context, so it’s a heated setting, but a good reminder, nevertheless, to serve the Lord diligently … and with gladness (Psalm 100:2).
Exciting things happening at Crossroads :
Parking Lot Party – Sunday, October 27
We’re having a block party for our church and our neighbors ! Sunday, October 27, following the worship service. We’ll have hot dogs, chips and drinks, and we’ll enjoy games and fellowship. Invite someone you know to join us that Sunday ! If you would like to help in some way, please contact Julie Kemper (417-321-3999). She’s especially looking for help setting up tables before the worship service that Sunday. Pray that God will bless this effort and build connections among people.
Children’s Church
We have a wonderful opportunity for a couple of people to serve for a while on the Children’s Church rotation. Michaela Walker is available after worship this Sunday if you would like to learn more about what that might look like. Please plan to stay for a few minutes if you can. Also, if you would like to help with the older class (7-11 year-olds), please let Emily Lewis know that. Thank you !
Nominating Committee
We need five helpful, prayerful church members to be on this year’s Nominating Committee. The work will basically take place during the month of November. The goal of the committee is to seek God’s will for a nominee for the elder position that will open up in January. Please let one of the current elders know if you would like to serve on the committee. (The election of a new elder will take place at the December 15 congregational meeting.)
This Week :
- Breakfast & a Bible study this Saturday morning, 8:00-9:15 at the church. This will be the final regular study. The following Saturday (10/26) will be breakfast together at 54 Cafe.
- Worship this Sunday morning at 10:00.
- Hymn Study Small Group this Sunday evening, 6:30-7:30 at the Knoches, 1605 W. Maple.
- Immerse next Wednesday evening, 7:00-8:15.
Women’s Christmas Fellowship, November 10
Come join for a time of snacks and fellowship while painting a nativity ornament with Jeanette Hawkins from I Heart Art ! November 10, 3 pm, at the church. Cost is $20. Please sign up by November 3 if you’d like to attend. Contact Erin Townsend (417-684-7067 or ektownsend12@gmail.com) for more details.
I’m personally excited about our Parking Lot Party on the 27th. It seems kind of part outreach and part fellowship. A chance to connect with folks in our own neighborhood and others !
I’m also looking forward to this Sunday’s sermon from Romans 13 about Christians and Their Government. How does Paul’s statement, “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities,” apply in a nation that is built on government by the consent of the governed ? As we approach an important election, what should be our attitude toward government ?
I met with two individuals from the church earlier this week to do some planning for Crossroads’ Christmas Eve service. It’s going to be a special and meaningful part of our Christmas season ! I hope you’ll make plans to attend, and bring family or friends, if you’re in town December 24 at 6 pm.
Finally, …
There’s a new update available from our Evangelical Free Church Central District. I think you’ll find it interesting and informative. You can sign up to receive it at Home — EFCA Central
My friend and former missionary colleague, Hank Griffith, writes these good thoughts on life in the local church :
I love the local church. I “grew up” in the church. My home church was just four blocks from our house. My parents were active in every way there. Over the years I had numerous and varied opportunities to grow spiritually, as well as to serve in my church. As an adult I now realize that no local church is perfect, but the Church universal (and its extension – local churches) is truly the bride of Christ for whom He gave His life.
Do I love the people of my church? Last year I led a couple of different Bible studies on the Epistle to the Philippians and was struck by how much Paul loved these people! Of course, he had led many of them to Christ on his first visit there (Acts 17:11-40), but listen to what he wrote them : “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy.” (Phil. 1:3-4) He ends by calling the Philippian Christians, “my brothers and sisters whom I love and long for, my joy and crown” (Phil. 4:1.) In between these two verses there are many other warm expressions of Paul’s love for these people.
Am I willing to get involved with the people of my church? Paul not only evangelized the Philippians and taught them the Word, he loved them enough to chastise them and help them work through their problems. For example, “I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. Yes, and I ask you, my true companion, help these women since they have contended at my side in the cause of the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my co-workers, whose names are in the book of life.” (Phil. 4:2-3.)
A final quote on the church: “I think the greatest weakness in the church today is that almost no one believes that God invests His power in the Bible. Everyone is looking for power in a program, in a methodology, in a technique, in anything and everything but that in which God has placed it – His Word. He alone has the power to change lives for eternity, and that power is focused on the Scriptures.” (R.C. Sproul)
I look forward to seeing you this Sunday morning !— Tom
