“My goal is God Himself, not joy nor peace,
nor even blessing, but Himself, my God.”

— Oswald Chambers in My Utmost for His Highest

I was convicted, while reading the above, that much of my life as a follower of the Lord is about receiving blessings from him – physical help; help with finances; relational help; help in my work; joy; peace; personal growth.

Yet, the Apostle Paul wrote : “… that I may know him …” (Philippians 3:10). Our greatest goal in life is to know the Lord Jesus Christ personally, and to help build up his “Body” (the Church) while on the earth.

That change in perspective helped me today. Also, as I was reading in Romans 4 and 5 this morning, these three thoughts jumped out at me :

“We rejoice in hope.” (Romans 5:2)

“We rejoice in our tribulations.” (Romans 5:3)

“Hope does not disappoint.” (Romans 5:5)

The Lord is our hope, … and he does not disappoint. We know him better as we journey through our trials. He does bless us along the way – he meets our daily needs – but most of all we have the chance to know him!

This Sunday

I hope to see you this Sunday morning ! We always have a great time ! Our emphasis will be on prayer : “Reaching Up To God Through Prayer.” Come for a special time of worship and fellowship starting at 10:00.

Other Happenings at Crossroads

Youth Group: Some of our youth had a great time last night riding horses, playing games, and sharing life together. They’ll meet again next Wednesday, July 18th, 6-8 pm. Check with Forrest for more details.

Wednesday Prayer Group: The Wednesday evening prayer group continues to meet on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm at the home of Judi and Phill Edwards. It’s a rich time, and we’re seeing God answer prayers. Anyone is welcome. Contact Judi for information or directions. We would love to have you join us!

Kansas City Royals baseball: Looking forward to caravanning with several of you to the Royals-Cardinals game August 10!

Barbecue and evening worship, Sunday August 19: The YMCA will not be available to us on Sunday, August 19. Instead, we’re planning an outdoor worship service and a barbecue that Sunday evening! Reserve the date, and we look forward to a good time together as the school year kicks off! More details to come.

Welcome, Marie & Richard Roberts! We’re happy that Richard and Marie have officially joined Crossroads as new members. We’re blessed that you’re part of the church family!

Tom & family on vacation: The kids and I will be taking some vacation time starting this Sunday afternoon and continuing through July 24. If you have an emergency, please contact Cris, Dave, or Shane. If you have a prayer need, don’t hesitate to let Judi know. Thanks for your prayers for me and for my family. We are looking forward to some rest and a change of pace for a few days. Shane McCasland will preach at our worship service on Sunday, July 22. I know you’ll benefit from his ministry of God’s Word.

Walking the Walls

It was great to have Joe Chenoweth with us last Sunday morning. Joe is the Area Director for Young Life in the Kansas City area, and an elder at Cornerstone Community Church (Evangelical Free Church) in Harrisonville.

The elders have accepted Joe’s offer to lead us as a church through his newly-created program called “Walking the Walls” (based on the Old Testament story of Nehemiah). This is a pilot project for Joe, and as a result he is willing to “coach” us through the process for no charge. I’m really grateful that the Lord has given us such a gift!

In a nutshell, the purpose of Walking the Walls is to strengthen local church ministry and to make it a strong, sustainable ministry going into the future. One of the needs in a growing church is to identify what specific areas of ministry we want to pursue together. This is similar to Nehemiah’s story where Nehemiah identified the specific gates that needed to be hung in Jerusalem so that the walls could be built and the city made strong again. Joe’s going to assist us in that process over the course of the next several months. Be watching for more information and ways you will be involved!

See you this Sunday!

— Tom
