Monday Night Bible Study Live on Facebook starting this Monday
I love the idea of Monday Night Bible Study! It kind of reminds me of Monday Night Football! Although a Monday night Bible Study is infinitely more exciting than a football game!
And this summer’s series is one you’re going to really want to connect with. Our subject is “Spiritual Urban Legends,” based on a book by Pastor Larry Osborne called Ten Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe. You’re going to laugh and be seriously challenged at the same time. And we’ll all grow in our walk with the Lord.
What is a Spiritual Urban Legend? As Larry Osborne explains it, it’s just like a secular urban legend. It’s a belief, story, assumption, or truism that gets passed around as fact. In most cases the source is a friend, a Sunday School class, a Bible Study, a book, or even a sermon. Because these spiritual urban legends sound so plausible and come from reputable sources, they’re often accepted without question and then quickly passed on. They take on a life of their own. They become almost impossible to refute because “everyone” knows they’re true.
But far too often they’re a little bit — or a lot — off the mark. And the consequences can be devastating. A spiritual urban legend is like fool’s gold; it looks great at first glance, but once tested, it proves worthless.
Join us live on the Crossroads Facebook page, or in person with a small group of others at my house, 628 W. Arch Street. We’ll start promptly at 7 pm, starting this Monday, June 7.
The spiritual urban legends we’ll hope to examine this summer are these:
- Everything happens for a reason.
- Faith can fix anything.
- Christians shouldn’t judge.
- God has a blueprint for my life.
- God helps those who help themselves.
- Dead people go to a better place.
Are these statements biblically true? Are they spiritual urban legends? Or, are they something in-between? I look forward to our study!
A very special Sunday…
I hope you’ll join us this Sunday morning, starting at 10:00, for a special time of worship and fellowship. Our service will include…
- … wonderful worship led by one of our worship teams
- … a sermon on “Why We Never Need to Be Afraid”
- … worship around the Lord’s Supper
- … Joshua Hunt’s baptism.
Come join the church family and also be a support to Josh as he makes a profession of faith in Christ through baptism.
Following the baptism, we’ll have a cook-out for everyone! Hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and paperware will be provided. Plan to come, and bring a friend! We’ll also have some important discussion on things going on at Crossroads … and we’ll need your input! Thank you!
This Sunday night is Church Night at the Nevada Griffons’ game. If you’d like to sit with some others from Crossroads, let’s meet in the YMCA parking lot between 6:30 and 6:45. Game starts at 7:00. Bring a lawnchair if you can.
Check the church calendar at nevadacrossroadschurch.org, or watch for Sunday’s bulletin to show up on Facebook, for the rest of this week’s announcements!
Prayer
Would you join me in making the following a prayer for yourself and for Crossroads?
“Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:13)
Three simple prayer requests. Three simple instructions as we move forward.
See you Sunday!
